For years amongst oenophile’s, Rasteau has been known to produce the best Cotes du Rhône Villages. In 2009, Rasteau was granted AOC status to recognize the unique nature that separates it from being ‘just’ a Côtes du Rhône Villages. A terroir of smooth galets, limestone terraces, and mistral, Rasteau is a place perfectly suited for warm, voluptuous wines. The galets, heated by the intense Rhône sun, keep the vines warm at night – bringing ripeness to the grapes much like its big brothers Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. ORTAS, also known as Cave de Rasteau, is the largest landholder in Rasteau AOC. Committed to expressing the terroir as much as possible, they try to ‘interfere’ with the wine as little as possible; picking by hand, allowing the mistral to control pests, using as little sulfur as possible, and keeping oak ageing at a minimum.
